Kings & queens cheat sheet

Every monarch the test asks about, in order, with what to remember each one for.

William I1066–1087

'The Conqueror'. Won at Hastings, ordered the Domesday Book, began the Tower of London.

John1199–1216

Forced to agree to the Magna Carta in 1215.

Edward I1272–1307

Conquered Wales (1284) and built castles like Caernarfon and Conwy.

Edward II1307–1327

Lost to Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn, 1314.

Edward III1327–1377

Started the Hundred Years War with France, 1337.

Henry V1413–1422

Won the Battle of Agincourt, 1415.

Richard III1483–1485

Last York king. Killed at Bosworth: end of the Wars of the Roses.

Henry VII1485–1509

First Tudor king. Joined the red and white roses.

Henry VIII1509–1547

Six wives. Broke from Rome and set up the Church of England. Executed Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard.

Edward VI1547–1553

Protestant boy king. Book of Common Prayer.

Mary I1553–1558

Catholic. 'Bloody Mary': persecuted Protestants.

Elizabeth I1558–1603

Protestant. Defeated the Spanish Armada (1588). Had Mary, Queen of Scots executed. No children.

Mary, Queen of ScotsScotland, not England

Catholic queen of Scotland. Executed in 1587 on Elizabeth I's orders. Her son became James I.

James I1603–1625

James VI of Scotland: first to rule both. King James Bible. Gunpowder Plot, 1605.

Charles I1625–1649

Fought Parliament in the Civil War. Executed in 1649.

No monarch1649–1660

The Commonwealth. Oliver Cromwell ruled as Lord Protector.

Charles II1660–1685

The Restoration. Hid in an oak tree in 1651. Great Plague, Great Fire, Habeas Corpus.

James II1685–1688

Catholic. Fled in the Glorious Revolution; lost the Battle of the Boyne, 1690.

William III and Mary II1689–1702

William of Orange, from the Netherlands. Bill of Rights, 1689. Won the Boyne.

Anne1702–1714

Act of Union with Scotland, 1707. Last Stuart.

George I1714–1727

First Hanoverian, from Germany. Relied on Walpole, the first Prime Minister.

George II1727–1760

Bonnie Prince Charlie's Jacobites defeated at Culloden, 1746.

George III1760–1820

Lost the American colonies (1776). Ireland joined the UK (1801).

Victoria1837–1901

The British Empire at its largest. Industrial and Victorian Britain.

George V1910–1936

Changed the royal family's name to Windsor in 1917, during the First World War.

Elizabeth II1952–2022

Longest-reigning British monarch. Diamond Jubilee 2012.

Charles III2022–today

The current King and head of state.

Don't mix them up

Charles I or II?

One lost his head (I, 1649); Two hid in a tree and came back (II, 1660).

Elizabeth I or II?

The First fought the Armada (1588); the Second reigned the longest (1952–2022).

Henry V, VII or VIII?

V for Victory at Agincourt · VII started the Tudors · VIII had the six wives and the new Church.

James I or II?

The First brought the Bible and the Bonfire plot; the Second bolted in 1688.

Which Mary?

Mary I burned Protestants · Mary, Queen of Scots was beheaded · Mary II ruled with William.

William I or III?

The First conquered (1066); the Third came from Orange (1688).

George I or III?

The First came from Germany; the Third lost America.

Edward I or VI?

The First built Welsh castles; the Sixth was a boy king.
