How many members are in the House of Lords?

There is no fixed number. Most are life peers, appointed by the monarch on the Prime Minister's advice; life peers have existed since 1958. There are also some hereditary peers and senior Church of England bishops.

How many members do the devolved parliaments have?

Scottish Parliament: 129 MSPs. Welsh Parliament: the handbook says 60 members (it grew to 96 at the 2026 election). Northern Ireland Assembly: the handbook says 108 MLAs (now 90). In the test, use the handbook figures.

What is the UK's population?

The handbook says just over 62 million (2010). About 84% live in England, 8% in Scotland, 5% in Wales and under 3% in Northern Ireland.

How often is there a census?

Every 10 years since 1801, except 1941 during the Second World War. Census records are kept private for 100 years.

How many countries are in the Council of Europe and the UN Security Council?

The handbook says the Council of Europe has 47 member states (now 46). The UN Security Council has 5 permanent members, including the UK.
